The Story of O2 Mobile UK

O2 is one of the oldest and most established mobile networks in the United Kingdom. Its roots go back to 1983 when Telecom Securicor Cellular Radio Limited was formed as a 60/40 joint venture between British Telecom and Securicor. The network officially launched on 7 January 1985 as Cellnet โ€” just six days after Vodafone launched, making them the two original cellular networks in the UK.

In 1999, BT acquired Securicor's share and rebranded to BT Cellnet. The network was spun off from BT Group in 2001 as part of mmO2 plc, which then adopted the O2 brand across all markets in 2002. Spanish telecoms giant Telefรณnica acquired O2 plc in 2006 for approximately ยฃ17.7 billion. In 2021, O2 merged with Virgin Media to form Virgin Media O2, a 50/50 joint venture.

The Story of Three UK

Three is the youngest of the UK's major networks, launching in March 2003 as the country's first 3G-only operator. It was launched by Hutchison Whampoa (now CK Hutchison Holdings), a Hong Kong-based conglomerate. Three made history by being the first UK network launched entirely on 3G infrastructure, skipping 2G completely โ€” a bold and controversial decision at the time.

Three carved a unique identity by offering generous data allowances at lower prices than competitors, and pioneered unlimited data plans in the UK market. In 2013, Three acquired Orange Austria, and in 2015 attempted to acquire O2 โ€” a deal blocked by EU competition regulators. In 2025, Three completed its long-awaited merger with Vodafone UK, creating the combined VodafoneThree entity.

The Story of EE (Everything Everywhere)

EE was formed in 2010 through the merger of T-Mobile UK and Orange UK โ€” two networks that had each operated in the UK since the 1990s. T-Mobile UK launched in 1999 (originally as One2One, launched 1993), while Orange launched in 1994. The combined entity was jointly owned by Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile's parent) and France Tรฉlรฉcom/Orange S.A.

EE made history on 30 May 2012 when it launched the UK's first commercial 4G network, giving it a significant head start over competitors. EE was acquired by BT Group in 2016 for ยฃ12.5 billion. Today EE is widely regarded as the UK's highest-performing network, consistently topping independent speed and coverage benchmarks.

The Story of Tesco Mobile

Tesco Mobile launched in 2003 as a joint venture between Tesco (the UK's largest supermarket) and O2. It operates as an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator), meaning it does not own physical network infrastructure but instead leases capacity from O2's network, offering customers the same coverage and connectivity as O2.

Tesco Mobile has grown to become the UK's largest MVNO with over 5.7 million customers. Its unique selling point is the integration with the Tesco Clubcard loyalty programme โ€” customers earn Clubcard points on every pound spent on their mobile bill. The network has won the Best Mobile Network for Customer Service award at the Uswitch Telecoms Awards five years in a row (2022โ€“2026).

The Story of Vodafone UK

Vodafone holds a unique place in history as the network that made the UK's very first mobile phone call on 1 January 1985, when Sir Ernest Harrison called Sir Anthony Bevins. Vodafone Group plc was incorporated in 1984 as Racal Telecom, a subsidiary of Racal Electronics. It was demerged from Racal Electronics in 1991 and renamed Vodafone Group plc.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Vodafone expanded aggressively globally, acquiring networks across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. In the UK, Vodafone has maintained its position as one of the top-tier operators, known particularly for international roaming capability and business services. In 2025, Vodafone UK completed its merger with Three UK, creating the combined VodafoneThree entity with a combined subscriber base making it the UK's largest network by subscribers.

โ“ Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common UK mobile questions.

What is SIM Only?
+
A SIM-only plan gives you a SIM card with a set amount of minutes, texts, and data โ€” but no handset. You use it in a phone you already own. It's typically cheaper than a Pay Monthly phone contract because you're not paying for a device.
What is Pay Monthly?
+
Pay Monthly is a contract where you pay a fixed amount each month. This can include a new handset (spreading the cost) plus an airtime allowance of calls, texts and data. Contracts are typically 24 months.
What is Pay As You Go (PAYG)?
+
Pay As You Go means you top up credit in advance and pay for what you use. There's no monthly contract commitment. Most networks now offer 30-day rolling bundles on PAYG that give you a set allowance of data, calls and texts for a fixed top-up amount.
Can I keep my number when switching networks?
+
Yes. You can keep your existing mobile number when switching to any UK network by using a PAC code (Porting Authorisation Code). Text PAC to 65075 from your current mobile โ€” it arrives within one minute and is free. Give it to your new provider and your number transfers within one working day.
What is a PAC code?
+
A PAC (Porting Authorisation Code) is a code you get from your current network to take your phone number with you when you switch. Text PAC to 65075 to receive it instantly for free. Your PAC is valid for 30 days.
Does eSIM work on every phone?
+
No โ€” eSIM requires compatible hardware. eSIM is generally supported on iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and many other modern flagship devices. Always check your specific model on the network's website before ordering.
What is 5G and do I need it?
+
5G is the fifth generation of mobile network technology, offering significantly faster speeds (typically 100-500+ Mbps), lower latency and greater capacity than 4G. Whether you need it depends on your usage โ€” for most everyday tasks, 4G is perfectly sufficient. If you stream large files, use mobile hotspots heavily, or work from your phone, 5G can make a meaningful difference.
How do I check mobile coverage in my area?
+
Each major network has a coverage checker on their website where you can enter your postcode. Ofcom also provides an independent coverage checker at ofcom.org.uk that shows predicted coverage for all networks. For real-world accuracy, try a PAYG SIM at your location before committing to a contract.
What should I check before choosing a plan?
+
Key things to check: (1) Coverage at your home, work and regular locations, (2) Data allowance vs your actual usage, (3) Contract length and exit fees, (4) Whether 5G is included if you need it, (5) Roaming terms if you travel abroad, (6) Mid-contract price rise clauses, (7) Total cost over the contract period.
Is Overmass.online an official network website?
+
No. Overmass.online is a completely independent informational website. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by O2, EE, Three, Tesco Mobile, Vodafone, or any other mobile network or related company. Brand names are used only for factual educational reference.
Are the prices on this website guaranteed?
+
No. Any price information on this website is for general reference and educational purposes only. Mobile plan pricing changes frequently. Always check directly with the relevant network for current, accurate pricing before making any decision.
What is a data allowance?
+
A data allowance is the amount of mobile internet data included in your plan, measured in gigabytes (GB). Activities like browsing use relatively little data, while streaming HD video uses much more. 1GB per month suits light users; most people benefit from 5-15GB; heavy users or hotspot users may need unlimited data.
What is unlimited data?
+
Unlimited data means there is no monthly cap on your data usage. However, always check the small print โ€” some unlimited plans include fair use policies, speed throttling at certain thresholds, or restrictions on tethering/hotspot usage. Genuine unlimited plans from networks like Three have no speed cap.
What is mobile roaming?
+
Roaming means using your mobile phone on a foreign network when you travel abroad. Since Brexit, UK networks are no longer required to offer free EU roaming. Some networks include free EU roaming (e.g. O2, Tesco Mobile, Three), while others charge a daily fee. Always check your network's roaming policy before travelling.
Can I compare O2 with other networks?
+
Yes โ€” use our Compare Options page for a side-by-side comparison of O2, EE, Three, Tesco Mobile and Vodafone across coverage, speed, pricing and features. Independent comparison sites like Ofcom, Uswitch, and MoneySavingExpert also provide useful independent comparisons.
